Cholesteatoma complications management in ENT Clinic Cluj-Napoca
Kursleiter:
M. Cosgarea, Cluj-Napoca (Rumänien)
Cholesteatoma remains one of the most challenging ear diseases, its evolution leading sometimes to serious complications (facial palsy, vestibular disorders, meningitis, intracranial abscesses, sigmoid sinus thrombosis etc). Surgical treatment is always required. Depending on the extent of the lesions, and the severity of the complications, a reconstructive technique may be performed, allowing the recovery of the hearing loss, besides a complete erradication of the disease. Material:
We reviewed the operative reports of 523 cases treated in the ENT clinic from Cluj between 1998-2006. Patients ages ranged from 3 to 81 years, with a mean age of 30. All patients underwent surgery with case-by-case individualization.
Results: Recurrence of the cholesteatoma was noticed in 28% of cases, requiring a second intervention. The hearing improvement occurred in 58% of cases.
Conclusions: The cholesteatoma must always be operated, the technique being individualized from case to case.
